Five-year-old Chen Xiaole, who grew up in Dahuang Village, is sent into the city alone by her father, Chen Muhan, to find her eight older brothers who are working in the city. She must bring them all home to celebrate the Chinese New Year together. Carrying only a wooden hairpin magic wand handmade by her father, a backpack full of golden liquid that she mistakes for water, an old magic book, and a crumpled household registration booklet, she sets off on her journey to reunite with her family.
