Half a Lifetime of Storms, an Elder Brother Is Like a Father
On New Year's Eve in 1998, with heavy snow falling, the lonely and helpless Zhou Chunmiao huddles outside Song's Woodwork Shop, starving. She is discovered by the kindhearted Mr. and Mrs. Song. Her aunt arrives chasing Zhou Jianping and Zhou Jianjun, who have stolen steamed buns, and raises her hand to punish the children. During the struggle, the redwood box containing Chunmiao's mother's keepsakes falls into the snow. To give his little sister a chance at survival, her elder brother Zhou Jianping suppresses his heartbreak and makes the painful decision to entrust the young Chunmiao to the Song couple. He then leaves alone with his younger brother. On that snowy New Year's Eve, the three siblings are forced apart.

1998년 섣달그믐날, 눈이 펑펑 쏟아지는 가운데 외롭고 의지할 곳 없는 저우춘먀오는 굶주린 채 쑹 씨 목공소 앞에 웅크리고 있었다. 마음씨 좋은 쑹 사장 부부가 그녀를 발견한다. 찐빵을 훔친 저우젠핑과 저우젠쥔을 쫓아온 큰어머니는 아이들을 혼내려고 손을 치켜든다. 실랑이를 벌이는 사이 춘먀오가 어머니의 유품을 담아 둔 붉은 나무 상자가 눈밭에 떨어진다. 여동생에게 살아갈 길을 마련해 주기 위해 큰오빠 저우젠핑은 가슴 아픈 마음을 억누르고 어린 춘먀오를 쑹 씨 부부에게 맡기기로 결심한다. 그리고 남동생을 데리고 홀로 떠난다. 섣달그믐날 눈 내리는 밤, 세 남매는 어쩔 수 없이 헤어지게 된다.
