In the winter of 1998, nine-year-old Shen Zhiqiu and her six-year-old younger brother, Shen Xiaoman, lose their parents in a fatal workplace accident. Their uncle, Shen Dayong, takes their compensation money and throws them out of the family home. The siblings take shelter in an abandoned boiler room, surviving by collecting scrap paper and empty bottles. Determined to keep her little brother learning to read, Zhiqiu takes half of a pencil from the secondhand bookstall of Zhou Bonian, a retired teacher, and is publicly accused of stealing. But Zhou claims the pencil is cracked and unusable, and says he told the child to take it. Secretly following the siblings to their rundown shelter, he discovers Zhiqiu using discarded newspaper to teach her feverish little brother how to write the character for 'home'.
