Liu Jiaojiao, a modern PhD in agricultural and forestry sciences, finds herself transported into the body of the falsely accused legitimate daughter of a marquis's household, exiled to the desert. Along with her elderly servant, Granny Liu, she is stranded in the vast Canglan Desert. Using her professional expertise, she improves saline-alkali soil, builds canals to bring in water, takes in refugees and establishes villages. She defeats bandits and corrupt officials, transforming the barren wilderness into a prosperous Jiangnan beyond the Great Wall. Eventually, the marquis's family is exonerated, and she leads everyone to receive an imperial pardon, building a self-sufficient oasis where they can finally live in peace.
