Fifteen-year-old Lin Xiaoman goes up the mountain to gather wild vegetables and unexpectedly rescues a snow-white little hedgehog. With three short, pale golden spines growing on its back, the round and clever little creature is given the name Futuan by Xiaoman. To her surprise, Futuan can find wild yams, hazelnuts, and medicinal herbs, as well as sense dangers along mountain paths, bringing new hope to the Lin family's difficult life. Jealous neighbor Qian Guihua offers twenty yuan to buy Futuan, but when that fails, she conspires with her husband to steal the hedgehog and force it to search the mountains for treasure. However, the little hedgehog refuses to obey, and the greedy couple repeatedly get their comeuppance. After Futuan is recovered, Xiaoman decides to return it to the forest. She believes they have said their final goodbye, but one year later, the little fellow returns with its entire family!
