In a rural village in northern China in the 1990s, Lin Chunmei has just given birth to her second daughter. Because she has failed to give her husband's family a son, she is mistreated by her in-laws and eventually thrown out of the house with her two daughters. When she has nowhere left to turn, Chen Zhiyuan, her childhood sweetheart, offers her a helping hand.
