In the eighteenth year of Yongping, tens of thousands of Northern Xiongnu cavalry besieged the Western Regions. Colonel Geng Lie of the Wuji School led three hundred Han soldiers to stubbornly defend Jinpu and relocate to defend Shule, running out of water and food, digging wells to find springs, boiling armor to stave off hunger, refusing to surrender and executing the envoys, resisting the enemy with flesh and blood for nearly a year. The imperial court's reinforcements marched thousands of miles west, crossing avalanches and blockades, and rescued twenty-six surviving soldiers on the eve of the city's fall. On the journey back, wind, snow, pursuers, hunger, and injuries consumed them in turn, and ultimately only thirteen people walked into Yumen Pass. Three hundred people went out of the pass, thirteen people returned to the pass: behind every character 'present' lies a long road measured with flesh and blood.
