Fu Shun, living alone in the countryside, is left behind in the village by his son and daughter to live by himself after his wife passes away. At the market, he sees an elderly yellow ox about to be slaughtered. Feeling a surge of compassion, he takes out his savings to buy the ox and brings it home. The villagers all mock him, saying that two old creatures unable to labor together are utterly useless, but Fu Shun does not mind, spending day and night with the ox. The ox secretly helps him multiple times and reveals strange abilities in times of crisis, for it is no ordinary beast after all. His children, who haven't returned home for a long time, suddenly come back. Conflicts of interest, family dilemmas, and hidden secrets slowly unfold, and Fu Shun gradually comes to understand that family members who accompany you with a sincere heart may not necessarily share blood ties.
