A Qiao, a little girl from a mountain village, has a grandmother who falls gravely ill and cannot be cured despite seeking all doctors. Hearing that the Living Stone Spring in the canyon has miraculous effects, she ventures alone with a rope into the secret realm. The striped giant toad guarding the pool initially sternly drives her away, warning her that the spring water is highly toxic and mortals will die upon touching it. Unfazed by danger, A Qiao speaks of her filial piety in saving her grandmother, which moves the toad. The toad takes out the Shizhilu it has treasured for three hundred years and gifts it to A Qiao, urging her to keep it a secret and never mention him to outsiders.
