Village wife A Chang and her husband have been married for twenty years, always living in a leaky old house. She resolves to tear down the old house and borrow money to build a new courtyard. Facing obstacles from her mother-in-law, demands for money from her brother-in-law, harassment from neighbors, and shoddy work by the contractor among layer upon layer of hardships, she neither retreats nor complains, resolving each one with wisdom and perseverance. Her husband shifts from silent avoidance to sharing responsibility side-by-side, and her brother-in-law changes from relying on his family to standing on his own feet. After over half a year of hardship, the new house is finally completed. On moving day, the family reunites and the neighbors live in harmony.
