Wang Cuifen, a single mother, learns that her son, Zhao Guangyao, has lung cancer and plans to spend all her savings on his treatment. Instead, her son and daughter-in-law misunderstand and believe that she is terminally ill. They scheme against her, pressure her into making a will, and drive her out of the house. Heartbroken, Wang Cuifen begins a new life under the care of her nephew, Jiang Weibin, and his girlfriend, Yang Xiting. When Zhao Guangyao and his wife attend a birthday banquet to curry favor with the powerful, they publicly humiliate Wang Cuifen, only to have their own shameful secrets exposed. Zhao Guangyao is fired from his company. Everyone eventually discovers that Zhao Guangyao was the one who had lung cancer all along. His wife takes all his assets and abandons him, leaving him destitute and desperately seeking medical treatment. Wang Cuifen helps him recover his stolen money but no longer feels any attachment to him. In the end, she boards a plane with Jiang Weibin and Yang Xiting, heading overseas to begin a completely new life of her own.
