I Earn 4.8 Million a Year, But There's No Seat for Me at the Main Table
On Lunar New Year's Eve, Shen Yan returns to his village with over 30,000 yuan worth of cigarettes and alcohol. Yet at the New Year's Day banquet, his father-in-law publicly stops him from sitting at the main table. "You're a live-in son-in-law. Go help out in the kitchen." For five years, Shen Yan has been the one carrying the liquor, setting the tables, and paying the bills, yet he has no seat of his own. He tears up the order for a massage chair and leaves the village. With four phone calls, he suspends the secondary SIM card, cancels the insurance policy, and checks the money transfers. On the sixth day of the New Year, his father-in-law breaks his leg and demands 200,000 yuan. Shen Yan refuses to give him another penny and starts keeping a record of everything. Stolen keys, fake injury photos, protest banners, and livestreams—all are documented in his ledger. During court mediation, his wife asks, "In these five years, was there even one day when you truly wanted to spend your life with me?"
