Poor commoner Chen Shouyi exhausted his life savings to save an old turtle awaiting slaughter. The old turtle channeled life into the withered spring veins, saving the drought-suffering commoners of Qingshi Town. The bully Zhou Wancai, seeing profit and turning greedy, monopolized the spring eye to hoard and corner the market, frantically seizing wealth, and ultimately suffered a crushing defeat due to the backlash of his greed. The story urges people to renounce greed and turn toward kindness, demonstrating the simple moral truth that all things should be taken with moderation, and the common people share in the fortune of creation.
