Gu Huai travels abroad to clear his mind, only to stumble upon his biological mother, whom he believed had died of illness and been cremated, living a leisurely life with her illegitimate son, Yan Yang, his wife, Shang Suisui, and a newborn. He suddenly realizes that his wife's miscarriage and his mother's death after leaving a farewell letter were all elaborate deceptions. To support Yan Yang, his mother faked her death to force Gu Huai out of his marriage, leaving him depressed and subjected to public criticism. Gu Huai joins forces with his friend Song Ye to plan a counterattack, staging his own death by wrist-cutting to expose the lies. When the deception is revealed, the conspirators turn against one another in suspicion and hostility. Gu Huai's mother suffers a mental breakdown and dies, while Shang Suisui breaks with Yan Yang. Gu Huai conceals his identity and retreats to heal, eventually reuniting with Shen Yun. Freeing himself from the shackles of his dysfunctional family and failed marriage, he finally embraces a new life of his own.
