Fish farmer Chen Mo faces off against the greedy couple, Wang Dahang and Zhang Guilan. Using his exceptional skills, Chen Mo turns a derelict pond into a treasure trove. Jealous of his success, the couple repeatedly extort him, even locking gates and blocking roads to demand a share of his profits. Chen Mo appears to give in, but under cover of darkness, he transports and sells 3,000 jin of loaches by wheelbarrow, leaving the pond empty. When Wang Dahang takes over, he cuts costs by failing to install escape-proof netting. Then the heavy rains of the plum rain season arrive, and every last loach escapes. The story illustrates a simple truth: 'You can fool the land for a while, but the land will fool you for a year.' Only by working diligently, following the rules, and earning money through honest labor can one truly become prosperous.
