Chen Yan, a modern comic artist, transmigrates to the Great Liang dynasty. After a mix-up over his birth identity, he is forced to return to a poor farming family. Breaking free from his clan's exploitation, he uses his artistic skills to earn a living and pursue an education. When the Gao family monopolizes the imperial examinations and repeatedly frames him, Chen Yan overcomes every obstacle, builds alliances with officials, and uses public opinion among scholars and political maneuvering at court to bring the Gao family down once and for all. He travels to the capital, achieves the rare feat of ranking first in all three imperial examinations, and establishes himself at court, breaking the aristocracy's monopoly and protecting opportunities for aspiring scholars from humble backgrounds.
