A young girl from a mountain village is working in the fields when an old woman claiming to be her grandmother suddenly appears at her door. Beneath the affectionate manner lies a terrifying secret — this visitor is actually a bear that craves human flesh. Faced with mounting danger, the girl lies, saying the red beans she grows can be cooked into the sweetest, most fragrant porridge in all the world. She secures a slender chance to live by promising it by the Winter Solstice. Granny Bear believes her, eagerly looking forward to the porridge — and the meal to follow — while the girl sets about finding a way to save herself.
