Surgeon Bai Jiuer time-travels to become the legitimate daughter of the Bai family and a wicked supporting female character with a tragic ending in a historical romance novel. To escape the original plot's reckoning, she invests in impoverished scholars, opens the Xinglin Clinic under the pseudonym of the miraculous healer Mother Huichun, and accumulates connections and wealth. She saves the original male lead, meets the Seventh Prince Tan Chenjia—who is afflicted with a strange poison—and repeatedly saves him with modern medical skills, drawing closer together while also discovering that her stepsister is suspected of time-travel. Disaster victims flood into Nanjing, and she settles over one hundred thousand refugees. Just as she plans to enter the capital to investigate the canal corruption case, her father disappears, leaving behind an ebony box containing the Imperial Jade Seal, and the chess game officially unfolds.
