The Mud God Statue That Does Not Seek Incense
The poor woodcutter's wife, Su Wannian, disregarding the gossip of others, rescues a despised and discarded clay statue of the God of Wealth from the river. With her household impoverished, she does not worship it with incense, treating the clay statue merely as a guest. She uses the twelve copper coins intended for her husband's medicine to help a stranger in distress, and the clay statue speaks to enlighten the couple.
