The duck shed left behind by her father is dilapidated, fifty mallards are emaciated, and they still owe money for rice bran. Lin Sanniang refuses to sell the duck flock at a low price, and paddles a bamboo raft into the reed marshes to find feed, but she encounters the plum rains, making fresh eggs hard to transport and salted eggs fail repeatedly. She and her stubborn cousin go from dispute to cooperation, relying on a pair of hands to figure out the ways of duck raising and curing. An order from an inn brings a turning point to the business, and also pushes Sanniang to a new dilemma: whether to borrow money alone to expand the shed, or to teach the method to the neighbors and make the good eggs of Luwan into a good life together.
