In a year of famine and disaster, within the impoverished peasant Lin family, the second son Lin Dashan has supported the family's livelihood for years. After a severe illness, he is treated as a burden by his adoptive father and eldest brother, who take advantage of heavy snow to abandon him in the potter's field. At death's door, Lin Dashan forms a blood pact of marriage with Ning Shu, a mountain goddess whose golden body is shattered. The pact grants Lin Dashan the ability to understand animal speech and recognize spiritual treasures, but he must protect the mountains and forests, treat all living creatures kindly, and accumulate golden light to help Ning Shu reshape her golden body. Concerned for his younger sister Xiaoman, who remains behind in the Lin family to suffer abuse, Lin Dashan returns to the village, resolutely cuts off family ties, and takes his sister to move into an abandoned old house at the edge of the village, where the two depend on each other for survival. Lin Dashan ventures deep into dangerous mountains to find rare treasures, accumulating wealth to break free from his tragic fate.
