Just after his father is buried, his second uncle seizes the family's farmland and drives Han Sheng and his mother into a land temple. During the funeral procession, a winged snake had already warned them, leaving behind a broken grain measure and a lame old hen. One grain falls into the measure, and overnight it fills to the brim. He gathers lingzhi mushrooms to save a young lady, uses three hundred shi of grain to avert a food crisis threatening the entire town, and employs black grain to demand the land deeds and expose unscrupulous grain hoarders. Yet this miraculous measure that multiplies grain is ultimately used to feed chickens.
