In the autumn of 1950, in Kaoshantun Village in Northeast China, Chen Baozhu refuses to remain under the control of a gang of beggars. During a wedding banquet, he seizes an opportunity to escape into the deep mountains. After being poisoned, he is rescued by an old hunter, Bai Zhiyong, and his loyal hunting dog, Tantou. Chen learns to hunt and train hunting dogs, and later saves his fellow sufferer Li Heilong. He helps the forestry station protect its timber and defeats a bandit gang. When the truth about his origins comes to light, he discovers that his kidnapping as a child was connected to his own uncle. With old grudges still unresolved across the snowy wilderness and his loyal dog protecting him every step of the way, can Chen make it home safely, bring the villains to justice, and reunite his family?
