My mother, who prided herself on being fair, made a new outfit for each of her children. My eldest sister got natural mulberry silk, my youngest sister received a thousand-yuan goose-down garment, but when it was my turn, all I got was a bundle of crumpled chicken feathers. As the middle daughter, I had long grown accustomed to being treated differently. My eldest sister represented the family's pride, while my youngest sister was everyone's darling. I was the invisible one, caught in the middle. When my mother suffered a stroke and was admitted to the village clinic, neither of my sisters bothered to stay by her side. After the clinic repeatedly called their workplaces and school, they finally remembered that they had another daughter. I arrived with a laying hen, only to be met with more criticism and demands. My sisters blamed me for everything, insisting that caring for our mother was my responsibility alone. For years, I had worked the family's cornfield, using the money I earned to support them while they enjoyed their comfortable lives. Now, I refused to be the family's endlessly exploited middle daughter any longer. Just as I began to stand up for myself, my mother accused me of being unfaithful to my husband. But they didn't know that Mr. Xu, my former teacher, had recently urged me to seize the opportunity to take the restored college entrance examination. For the first time in my life, I saw a chance to change my destiny.
