On the 29th of the twelfth lunar month in 1993, fisherman A Hai went to collect his share of dividends—his wife was lying in the hospital waiting for surgery money. Lao Xu only tossed him 10,000 yuan. He got down on his knees to beg, only to receive a fifty-yuan bill and a sneer: "You kneel quite smoothly." A Hai left his knife on the fish basket and pushed his boat out to sea. Little did he know that Lao Xu had already bribed the dock, the cold storage, and the administration to drive him to total ruin. It wasn't until his mooring permit was blocked, the ice was frozen out, and the unloading ramp was poured with concrete that A Hai realized this was never about money—someone wanted his life.
