Two Yuan Fifty in Wages, the Price of a Life
Lin Xiaoman, owner of a shrimp-peeling workshop, insists that workers wear protective gloves and pays them 1.5 yuan per jin. Female worker Tian Guifang is lured away by the higher rate of 2.5 yuan per jin offered by Donghai Cold Storage, taking her coworkers with her. But after arriving at the factory, they discover a series of harsh hidden requirements: they must peel at least 150 jin of shrimp every day to meet the quota. Those who fall short are paid only 0.8 yuan per jin, with various miscellaneous fees deducted and additional losses charged for water drainage from the shrimp. Caught between tempting wages and layers of exploitation, the women find themselves trapped in a dilemma, struggling amid backbreaking labor and ruthless calculations.
