In the 1970s, heavy snowfall seals off the mountains. Hunter Han Dashan lives with his wife, Du Xiufen, and daughter, Han Tiemei, relying on one another to survive. The local bully, Qian Yonggui, falsely accuses them of profiteering, hatches a vicious scheme to force them into debt, and even kidnaps Tiemei to extort money. While Dashan ventures deep into the mountains to hunt for treasures, Xiufen earns money by embroidering Suzhou silk embroidery late into the night. After being kidnapped, Tiemei bites through a red thread and leaves marks along the way to guide her parents. Following her clues, Han Dashan and his wife launch a nighttime assault on the dreaded Ghost's Sorrow Pass and rescue their daughter. They expose Qian Yonggui's crimes of using poisonous mushrooms to frame them and kidnapping Tiemei for ransom, ultimately bringing him to justice. At daybreak, amid flying snow, the family of three is finally reunited.
