In 1980s Suzhou, Su Jinxiu, an orphaned country girl, brings the extraordinary kesi silk tapestry-weaving technique passed down by her grandfather to the city to make a living. Yet she faces ridicule from neighbors, sabotage by colleagues, and repeated obstacles set by the factory director's daughter. Unfazed and dignified, she rises from a temporary worker to provincial competition champion with nothing but an embroidery needle, restoring damaged cultural relics so flawlessly that no trace of the damage remains. Eventually, she establishes a traditional craft training center, recovers the hundred national treasures secretly preserved by her grandfather, and builds an art museum. She spreads the nearly lost craft throughout the country and finds love and glory of her own on this very land.
