Grandmother Tells Me About Hua Mulan is a Chinese-style animated short film that unfolds the legendary story of Mulan from the Northern Dynasties through a grandmother and granddaughter reading The Ballad of Mulan together. Mulan cuts her hair and bids farewell to her family before enlisting in the army in her father's place. She grows from a new recruit into a commanding officer, enduring battles such as holding the rear at Black Mountain Pass and charging into enemy ranks alone on horseback. Her identity is unexpectedly exposed in the military medical tent, but her fellow soldier Liu Yuandu keeps her secret. When General He Lan returns victorious and reports to the court, the Khan issues an edict granting Mulan pardon and rewards. Mulan removes her armor and returns home. Under the moonlight, she practices spear dancing, having no desire for fame or fortune, and returns to the warmth of ordinary life. Combining traditional Chinese aesthetics with a blend of 2D and 3D animation, the film adopts a gentle and restrained visual style. Between the smoke of war and the smoke rising from village kitchens, it tells a story of filial devotion, righteousness, loyalty, courage, and the precious bonds of comradeship.
