He An, a matrilocal fisherman on Yumen Island, was framed with massive debt by corrupt merchants, expelled penniless, and fell into the raging sea. Saved at the cost of a tentacle by an old octopus and guided by sea creatures, he held his principles, turned in a sunken shipwreck, and refused illicit wealth. Uniting oppressed fishermen across two islands, he built industries, founded a cooperative, fought local tyrants, and took charge of their own livelihoods.
