In a northern Chinese village in the 1980s, the bold and determined Lin Yumei rejects an arranged marriage and chooses to marry the honest Sun Cheng’an. After the wedding, his family favors others over them, and the couple gets a raw deal when the household splits up. Refusing to be cowed, Lin Yumei works hard to build a business using her family’s traditional salted-egg recipe. Along the way, she and her sister-in-law Su Xiu’e move from bitter conflict to working together. They settle neighborhood disputes, help the villagers form a salted-egg cooperative, and open a processing plant. As the family resolves old grievances and casts aside prejudice, they work together toward a stable, prosperous new life.
