Wang Zhenzhen and Liu Gang are husband and wife. Liu Gang is an inveterate gambler who falls into a trap set by local thug Zeng Hu and is coerced into selling his child. Wang Zhenzhen adamantly refuses, leading Liu Gang to forcefully snatch the baby. A kind-hearted passerby, Duan Yong, intervenes. A brawl ensues between Liu Gang and Duan Yong, during which Duan Yong accidentally kills Liu Gang. Afterward, Duan Yong takes care of Wang Zhenzhen and her son for 22 years. The child, Wang Xiaochao, grows to adulthood—all the while searching for the person who killed his biological father.
