Zhao Yunxi, formerly known as Zhao Pannan, was the eldest daughter in a state-owned factory worker's family. Despised by her parents since childhood simply for being a girl, she was forced in 1980 to sign away her job replacement slot to her younger brother, Zhao Yaozu, and was cast out of the house into a torrential rainstorm. Master Chen, the workshop director, pawned his family heirloom gold watch to give her a train ticket south. Ten years later, under the name Zhao Yunxi, she returns as chairwoman of a Southern department store group and an SEZ Hong Kong investor. Disguising herself as destitute, she returns to the factory, establishes red and black lists, strips her brother of his official position at the restructuring meeting, and elevates her benefactor Master Chen to factory director. Facing her unreasonable parents with icy detachment, she is decisive, fiercely rewarding kindness and punishing betrayal.
