An elderly man suddenly collapses on the street from an acute illness, but onlookers are terrified of extortion, and no one dares to lend a helping hand. Lin Xia, an impoverished orphan girl, steps forward and spends the only one-dollar coin she has to buy a bowl of sugar water, saving the old man's life. She recounts her painful hardships: unpaid factory wages, the passing of her loved ones, and wandering the streets with nowhere to call home. Unexpectedly, the saved elder turns out to be the chairman of a conglomerate. Deeply moved by her kindness, he insists on bringing her into his enterprise, offering her a respectable job and a secure place to live. Clasping the old coin left behind by her grandfather, the destitute girl turns her destiny completely around.
