A Marriage That Need Not Yield
At forty-three, Zhou Jianye remarries. Tang Huilan arrives at the wedding wearing a red qipao, but her mother-in-law, Zhou Yuqin, blocks the steps with her cane. “Red is festive for a first marriage, but wearing it for a second marriage is showing off!” All their relatives watch to see whether Tang Huilan will bow her head, yet she returns the gray coat untouched. She may be divorced, but she has done nothing dishonorable. She has a daughter, but she has never tried to take advantage of anyone. She insists on wearing her red dress with dignity. No one expects that, from this very wedding onward, a family war over the house, children, money, and dignity will erupt.
