As an orphan born without a spiritual root, Chen Yan is destined by worldly consensus to have no fate with cultivation. After by chance witnessing cultivators flying on swords, he resolves to tread the path of immortality, enduring the whole village's ridicule, and is imparted basic breathing techniques by Elder Zhou, a failed cultivator. Through ten years of arduous cultivation day and night, he bids farewell to his confidante Su Wantang and journeys thousands of miles to attend the Qingyun Sect's trial. Enduring contempt from Lin Zhou, Zhang Heng, and others on the examination grounds, Chen Yan fights for a spot in the trials. In the mountain trial, arrogant prodigies with spiritual roots fall one after another, leaving only Chen Yan, whose unyielding grit carries him to the very end. Deeply moved, Daoist Xuanqing breaks sect tradition to accept the rootless mortal. Chen Yan knocks open the gates of immortality with mortal flesh and blood, proving that while innate talent decides where one begins, perseverance decides how far one goes.
