The widow Wen Yun endured hardship for eighteen years to raise Lu Jin and Lu Yu, the supposed posthumous twins of her late husband Lu Yan and Liu Ruyan, into accomplished scholars who both pass the imperial exams as Jinshi. At their birthday and celebratory banquet, Lu Yan and Liu Ruyan, who supposedly died long ago, return in glory to claim the sons. Having long prepared for this, Wen Yun publicly exposes the conspiracy, returns their real disabled biological offspring, and tears apart the greed and schemes of the entire Lu family step by step. The wicked meet miserable ends, while Wen Yun, having weathered half a lifetime of storms, finally reunites with her accomplished son and ushers in a bright, peaceful spring.
