In a realm where artifacts possess spirits and artisans connect with their souls, the premier artisan sect, the "Blazing Sun Artisan Court," extinguished overnight a century ago. Craftsmanship declined, and the world came to believe only in bloodlines, cultivation, and sects—no longer believing that artisanal craft could alter destiny. In an alley on the west side of the city, Shen Zhuo, a poor artisan apprentice who mends copper kettles and oil-paper umbrellas, is mocked by apprentice guild members for not having even basic mastery of heat. Yet whenever he touches a broken artifact, he can hear its whispers—neither ghosts nor demons, but the unspoken grievances artifacts bore on behalf of humans for a lifetime. When a worn lamp that guarded an orphan girl for three years weeps, he listens; when an ancient zither broken for twenty years falls silent, he reconnects its song.
