Top scholar Lu Zheng is demoted to become a magistrate in Nanjiang after offending powerful ministers. The region is plagued by miasma, frequent floods, entrenched local tyrants, and constant border incursions. Armed with modern science and engineering, Lu Zheng neutralizes toxic miasma, builds dams, improves tea processing, carves roads through mountains, and revitalizes agriculture and trade for the common people. However, he faces framing by the King of Zhennan and corrupt officials, while his disciple Xiao Shitou sacrifices himself to protect their technological craft. When northern nomadic invaders breach the passes and march south, Lu Zheng puts court grievances aside and leads the Nanjiang army, crushing the enemy and reclaiming lost land with upgraded weaponry. Following the victory, he declines princely titles and rich rewards, choosing instead to remain and guard his homeland. Just then, an anomaly emerges in the eastern seas as a new crisis quietly looms.
