As the most submissive daughter of the Cheng family, Cheng Kaiyi married into the Xie family bearing the weight of her clan's reputation. For five years, she fulfilled every duty of a virtuous wife—dutiful to her in-laws, free of jealousy and resentment—yet remained childless. What she never knew was that her husband, Xie Cheng'an, married her solely to shield his childhood sweetheart, Shen Suyu, and had even covertly drugged her to make her barren. When Shen Suyu returns bearing his child and Xie Cheng'an seeks to demote his legitimate wife to elevate an equal wife, Cheng Kaiyi feigns compliance and takes the initiative to request a divorce, subsequently staging her drowning in the river to prove her resolve in death. Through this faked demise, she utterly breaks free of her shackles, sheds her identity, and leaves for a distant land to embrace a reborn life of freedom, while the Xie and Shen families plunge into endless turmoil.
