Chen Ping'an, a young man from the countryside, is entrusted by his grandfather Chen Shoushan to enter the city with an iron box containing five old tokens to find five enemies his grandfather spoke of. Claiming his grandfather's days are numbered, he tracks down Zhou Wanshan, Shen Shantang, Ye Jiuzhen, and Gu Changhe—four prominent tycoons in business and medicine. As the tokens are delivered one by one, the buried truth of Shanhai Enterprises from forty-three years ago slowly comes to light. Only upon opening the final black envelope does he learn that the first four were never enemies; the person his grandfather truly owed was Huo Tianlin, son of Huo Qinghe. The descendants of these old acquaintances return to Nanhe Village, where half a lifetime of unsettled debts finally meets confrontation and reconciliation.
