Di fronte alla crisi della fame, Shen He si affida alla sua mente brillante e alle sue mani laboriose per partire da una pentola di zuppa calda, guadagnandosi via via la fiducia dei mercanti. Ripara case cadenti, gestisce una locanda e avvia un'attività di deposito di cereali, superando ogni volta i dubbi dei commercianti, i nubifragi e la crisi alimentare. Dalla totale povertà a un granaio traboccante, non solo cambia il destino delle due donne, ma riaccende una speranza di sopravvivenza per la gente in un anno di carestia.
