In the late 1980s, Shen Qinghe marries into the Zhou family with an empty dowry chest, enduring exploitation by her birth family and gossip from the villagers. A finales de los años ochenta, Shen Qinghe se casa con la familia Zhou llevando un baúl de dote vacío. Sufre la explotación de su familia de origen y los cotilleos de los vecinos del pueblo. Por suerte, conoce a Liang Suqin, su suegra, una mujer justa que la defiende sin vacilar. Siempre sale en su defensa y le enseña a desprenderse de las ideas anticuadas y a valorarse a sí misma. Poco a poco, Qinghe reúne el valor para enfrentarse a las exigencias irracionales de su familia y aprende a gestionar un negocio de tofu seco. Tras superar numerosas dificultades, da a luz a una hija llamada Xiaoman. Suegra y nuera se apoyan mutuamente, y el matrimonio permanece unido. Juntos rompen las cadenas de la familia de origen y construyen un hogar propio, cálido y tranquilo.
