In 1988, in a mountain village in Northeast China, Meng Changling supports his mother by hunting in the mountains and gathering medicinal herbs. While venturing into the mountains, he is betrayed by his paternal uncle Meng Mancang and his uncle's son, who try to kill him for his possessions and push him down a snowy slope as live bait for wild boars. His blood soaks his father's old illustrated book, awakening ten pages of the Mythical Illustrated Compendium. Using the Somersault Cloud, he escapes and reclaims his belongings. He subsequently unlocks more mythical treasures and, with the help of Tang Xiaohe and others, progresses from hunting alone to building a team, leasing barren mountains, and establishing a mountain-products business. He repeatedly foils his enemies' underhanded schemes, ultimately turning barren mountains into mountains of gold, giving his family a better life and making the evildoers pay the full price for their crimes.
