Lin Yan, an outer sect disciple, discovers half of a broken sword in the Qingfeng Mountain Valley. His fellow disciples, A Hu and two others, covet the treasure and move to seize it. Hidden within the broken sword is the remnant soul of an ancient sword cultivator. Rather than bestowing immense power directly, the remnant soul wishes only to accompany Lin Yan as he devotes himself to understanding the Dao. Lin Yan stays true to his principles and rejects shortcuts, tempering his swordsmanship through repeated tests of character.
