Zhou Ming is an ordinary high school student with an obsession with food that goes far beyond the norm. Su Nian, the school's belle in his class, always eats the lunch her mother packs for her. One whiff is enough for Zhou Ming to tell that her mother's cooking is exceptional. Every day at noon, he drools over Su Nian's lunchbox, packed with a variety of delicious side dishes. The braised lion's head meatballs especially haunt his dreams. Encouraged by his best friend Zhao Lei, Zhou Ming decides to write Su Nian a note asking for the recipe. Unexpectedly, the homeroom teacher intercepts the note on the spot, assumes it contains obscene material, and insists on publicly humiliating Zhou Ming's father at the parent-teacher meeting. Zhou Ming yalnızca kokusunu alarak bile Su Nian'ın annesinin olağanüstü bir aşçı olduğunu anlar. Her gün öğle vakti, çeşitli yemeklerle dolu Su Nian'ın beslenme kutusuna bakıp ağzının suyunu akıtır. Özellikle soya sosunda ağır ağır pişirilmiş aslan başı köfteleri aklından hiç çıkmaz. Ancak sınıf öğretmeni notu anında ele geçirir, içinde müstehcen şeyler olduğunu düşünür ve veli toplantısında Zhou Ming'in babasını herkesin önünde küçük düşürmekte ısrar eder. Not, veli toplantısında büyük bir yanlış anlaşılmaya yol açtıktan sonra, yemek sayesinde kaderin çarkları sessizce dönmeye başlar.
