On a snowy night, the elderly forest ranger Li Shoucheng saves a talking black dog and names him Black Tiger. The granary key brought back by the dog exposes suspicions of shortages at Granary No. 2 in Qingsong Ridge. Granary keeper Ma Changshun and Zhao Youcai have long swapped old grain for new and forged paperwork to embezzle collective grain, even intentionally framing Li Shoucheng with discarded grain bags while scheming to seize his ancestral home. Adhering to his principles, Li Shoucheng uncovers the truth step by step through physical evidence, recovers the grain, and pushes the village to improve its granary management system. In the end, Black Tiger stays in the village to accompany the old man, guarding collective property and the mountain forest together.
