To erase the “anomaly” Sun Wukong, the Great Dao threatens the order of the Three Realms and commands Heaven and Spirit Mountain to join forces in hunting him down. Guided in secret by Patriarch Bodhi, Golden Cicada (Tang Monk’s former incarnation) rescues Sun Wukong at Flower-Fruit Mountain before he has taken a master, then protects him on the perilous journey to Mount Fangcun. Together they endure a relentless chain of ambushes by the Ten Kings of Hell, the Four Sages of the North Pole, the Heavenly Gate of Creation, the venerables of Spirit Mountain, and even the two quasi-sage emperors Changsheng and Ziwei. To help Wukong open the gates of Mount Fangcun, Golden Cicada burns the merit of eleven lifetimes, trading his heart for Wukong’s life and helping him restore his vitality. Wukong enters Bodhi’s discipleship, undergoes a ten-thousand-year trial in chaos, breaks through to the peak of quasi-sagehood, and once again sets out on the path of wreaking havoc in Heaven.
