Xie Nanyin was originally the concubine-born daughter of the Grand Chancellor of Great Qi, humble in status. Because her legitimate elder sister, Empress Xie Wanrong, was critically ill, in order to pave the path for Prince Jiang Heng, she lured and deceived Xie Nanyin into the palace to serve as an instrument to retain imperial favor. Unaware of the scheme, Xie Nanyin devoted herself to repaying her sister, unhesitatingly drinking the barrenness tonic to pledge her loyalty. Over the next ten years, wielding herself as a weapon, she eradicated noble consorts and slaughtered favored concubines for Jiang Heng, cutting a blood-soaked path through the perilous inner palace to help Jiang Heng ascend the throne. Little did she know that on the very day of Jiang Heng's coronation, his very first imperial edict was to execute Xie Nanyin.
