Eight years ago, young Shen Wujiu's father died unjustly in prison. Forty-seven petitions were dismissed, and eighteen-year-old him knelt outside the yamen, with no one sparing him a single glance. The path that the law refused to walk for him, he chose to walk in another way. Eight years later, he became a shadow in the dark—never showing his face, never leaving his name, only teaching desperate souls to do one thing. Every single act was carried out flawlessly. Every time, through another person, he retraced that path for himself. Until the very last path was walked. He left all the evidence on the desk of the Court of Judicature and Revision—portraits, letters, ledgers, and forty-seven petitions—and turned to walk away. The river flowed on, and he took nothing with him.
